An extremely rare sixth-century kommerkiarios seal
Lot 5174
Marinos and Lazaros, most glorious kommerkiarioi (of Tyre?), 565-574. Seal (Lead, 24 mm, 7.44 g). Crowned and draped imperial bust (of Justin II?) facing, flanked by crosses MAPIN૪ [S] / ΛAZAP[૪] / ЄNΔOΞΞ / KOMЄPK, / … ('[Seal] of Marinos and Lazaros, most glorious kommerkiarioi'). Rev. Textile imprint. Unpublished in the standard references. An extremely rare sixth-century kommerkiarios seal. Rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Unfortunately, the last line is unclear. However, these very early kommerkiarios seals are usually attributed to Tyre. Moreover, the name Marinos appears as one of a trio of kommerkiarioi of Tyre on a contemporaneous seal from the Seyrig collection (Seyrig 141).
